Junk Fest ignited three venues across St. Kevin’s Arcade. Whammy Bar, Backroom and The Wine Cellar on Karangahape road this Friday night. Tickets sold out prior to the festival where people travelled near and far to experience the soundwaves.
Musicians included Awning, Elliot & Vincent, K M T P, Feshh, Soft Bait, Cold Ceiling, Salt Water Criminals, Ringlets, Power Nap, Tooms, Dale Kerrigan, Grecco Romank and Caru.
Once you’d entered the underground venue each of the performance spaces were connected in a way that you could move between easily. A continuous beat flowed through the atmosphere that synergistically blended rather than clashing. Adding to the charm of the night.
Junk Fest’s set times were well curated so there was never a lull moment. Set times overlapped in just the right way so one set would begin as another was mid-way through and another was ending. You never had to miss a performance.
Crowds tended to peak mid-show with the rooms full of excitement, basically shoulder to shoulder with just the right amount of room for dancing.
Awning kicked off the night performing at the Wine Cellar Bar, followed by Elliot & Vincent at Whammy and K M T P at Backroom.
Next up was FESHH at The Wine Cellar stage, delivering an incredible set to experience. They played 6 songs beginning with Ritual and ending with Needlepoint.
Whammy and Backroom simultaneously packed out while Soft Bait and Cold Ceiling performed, the audience in each space bouncing back the lyrics chorused onstage.
Salt Water Criminals played a beautiful set at the Wine Cellar, with their acoustics dancing across the space in tempo with the audience.
Power Nap brought incredibly groovy psychedelic vapourware to Backroom. Colourful visuals flowed behind into the back wall matching the soundscape.
In kudos to a great festival, I’ll keep my writing short and let the photographs speak for themselves to the vibe & passionate energy delivered by the musicians that was mirrored right back by the audience.
