Matt Joe Gow – Closer to Tomorrow (EP): Review

Matt Joe Gow releases Closer to Tomorrow in a spare and stripped back version of the song Between Tonight and Tomorrow which appeared on the same titled album in March 2023. It was also released as the introductory single in February 2023.

The Reprise version is quiet and reserved, just an acoustic guitar and possibly a mandolin. It sounds like it could slip right into Springsteen’s Nebraska.

A song reflecting the wee small hours of the morning (thank you Frankie from Hoboken, New Jersey).

Matt Joe GowThe vocal phrasing is very much Bruce, and the sentiments and tone are shared between the two New Jersey greats.

You get a sense of the coming to terms of the buried pain behind the song.

The Remix version brings in strings and shuffle rhythm drums. Larger atmosphere and a little more dramatic, with some nice Mexican horns adding colour.

The Ambient versions may explore the influence of Art Terrorists Suicide, which informed a lot of the mood of the Nebraska album. It may have been a surprise when Springsteen revealed this.

Matt Joe Gow may be doing the same thing.
