Autogramm releases WannaBe today, Power Pop which is immediately dance friendly as well as having a studied detachment, fitting of arty Sixties psychedelic Pop bands.
Autogramm are relative newcomers, forming in Vancouver in 2017. The triad of Jiffy Marx, CC Voltage and Silo all come from numerous bands and projects. Lars Von Seattle is a recent conscript.
A hard-working band, they have two albums out already. What R U Waiting 4? (2018) and No Rules (2021). Their current body of work is due to be released on 17 November 2023, under the title Music That Humans Can Play. WannaBe is the taster.
Good time cerebral dance music with the Pop sensibilities of upbeat Eighties artists like Gary Numan, The Cars and the Go-Go’s is how they have been received by critics and fans.
WannaBe begins with a hypnotic drum and rhythm guitar riff which anchors and drives the song. They are known as a synth band but for this song that takes a background role of adding colour.
You can be as outrageous as you wanna be. Drummer Silo takes the lead tenor vocals, and they could have taken sonic inspiration from some of the great Beserkley Power Pop artists, like Greg Kihn, the Rubinoos and the Tyla Gang.
The cool hypnotic rhythm which drives the song at its core, may have inspiration from another classic British Sixties group, the Zombies. Time of the Season in particular.
Autogramm add a bit more swing to WannaBe. Both are arty Power Pop, with a little hint of psychedelia.
The accompanying video is appropriately retro. A good taster for the forthcoming album .
