Arborialis Luminarium is like being shrunk to microscopic level and entering a labyrinthine psychedelic lung. Or you may regard it as a multi-coloured mosque cathedral maze.

This huge balloon bubble structure occupies a central part of Aotea Square and is open for exploration up to 28 April 2024.

The company behind this, Architects of Air, based in Nottingham England, developed these art installations over forty years ago.

Since 1992, more than 3 million viewers in over 40 countries across 5 continents have been welcomed into Architects of Air’s monumental Luminaria, immersed in radiant colour that comes simply from daylight shining through the structures PVC fabric.

The luminaria designed by company founder Alan Parkinson are inspired by natural forms, geometric solids, Islamic and Gothic architecture.

Parkinson first started experimenting with pneumatic sculptures in the 1980s and has since developed his own language of form in this plastic medium.

1992 was the year he established the company Architects of Air to build and tour these massive installations around the world.

Arborialis Luminarium

It is a disorienting experience on entry. Losing your bearings and perspective is the first immersive experience.

You wander down large and small passageways. They appear to be huge animal eyes which end each path.

The only light not seen is white.

All the while you are soothed by warm ambient music. It has a relaxing and meditative effect.

Lie down on the plastic floor and you look up at cathedral domes in leafy geometric design.

The crucial difference is in using natural light for this effect. They are not harsh projected electric lights or strobes.

The Arborialis Luminarium experience is open for people of all ages, finishing on the 28 April 2024.
