Matt Joe Gow and Kerryn Fields – Your Heart of Gold: Single Release

Matt Joe Gow and Kerryn Fields

Matt Joe Gow and Kerryn Fields debut single Your Heart of Gold is sun-drenched Americana with deep old-time country roots.

Gow comes from Dunedin, close to the heartland of Country music in New Zealand. Fields has a background in folk music and is from Te Kuiti. Both are long term residents in Victoria, Australia, where they have gained recognition and popularity in the most fertile music scene in that country.

Matt Joe Gow & Kerryn Fields - Single Review: Your Heart of Gold - New Zealand Music ArticlesThe warmth is immediate from the fiddle and acoustic guitar. Old time Appalachian style roots country music.

Fields has a deeper mellifluous voice which approaches the tone of Sara Carter, from the Original Carter Family, especially with their famous Border Radio transcriptions. In these current times you would find that vocal style with Catherine Irwin of Freakwater.

Initially you may think its Gow leading out the song, but his distinctive Americana tenor comes in later.

We can turn the radio on, play Soul/ We can play it all night long.

There is inspiration from one of Warren Zevon’s best songs, Play It All Night Long. It sounds like Fields does some Stevie Nicks style harmony on the chorus. Nicks did that on the original Zevon recording.

Gow of course has a little Van Morrison in his delivery, with some of the lyrical passion of a Springsteen.

It’s a Radio song, so the duo is chasing the heels of Van the Man’s classic radio homages, Brown-Eyed Girl, Domino and Caravan.

We look forward to the forthcoming album from Matt Joe Gow and Kerryn Fields. Currently they are touring across New Zealand and finishing in Australia.
